Facebook casebook

If you're ever tempted to underestimate how very differently people think, take a look at your Facebook home page today.

Unless your Friends all come from one socio-economic-ethnic group, your page is likely to offer a  bizarre study of the prevailing preoccupations of human beings.

Today, the entries on my page cover:

-  the progress of a family's vomiting bug
-  pictures of a party buffet
-  beach photos from a long-haul destination holiday
-  pictures of Indian street children on their first-ever outing
-  cute puppy pix
-  the demise of a pet rabbit
-  the ongoing saga of somebody's slimming regime
-  a request for sponsorship for a homeless sleep-out
-  acerbic postings on Israeli/Palestinian politics
-  appreciation of a Christian/Muslim reconciliation initiative
-  cute baby pix
-  a complaint about Christmas marketing - enough already!
-  adverts for 'must-have' goods for the 'discerning' purchaser
-  girls in glitzy clothes and poses
-  reports from a project for trafficked Cambodian women
-  the latest piteous instalment of an ongoing battle with cancer
-  forwarded inspirational/motivational cliches
-  cute horse pix
-  children on stage in extravagant costumes and exuberant smiles

and
-  news of yet another execution of a US Death Row prisoner whose evidence of innocence has been dismissed or disregarded.

Just a taste of the some of the priorities that compete for our attention every day.

Which will win?
