Today I heard about a lady awaiting a serious operation. She was excited to hear that there was somebody local who prayed with people.
She's part of a group that's into 'holistic' healing, not Christian, and they've been praying with her. They are the only people, apparently, who are praying for her.
But she attends a mainstream Christian church most Sundays, which I know has a team of people very committed to praying with anyone who's sick or in need of prayer, and she hasn't asked them for help or even let them know she's ill.
That means, she's been to the doctor, been to the hospital, been to a group which is affiliated to 'new age' pagan philosophies, and is willing to go to some stranger (me), all in the hope of being healed ..... before she has approached her own vicar, who is very approachable and ready to pray with people and has a whole team trained to help him.
In my own church, this happens as well.
I'm not saying healing doesn't come through doctors and hospitals - clearly, that's what they're there for - or that all healing that doesn't derive its power from Jesus Christ is harmful (though sometimes it is).
It's just that it's sad when someone who has the benefit of being part of a living church community full of people willing to pray with anyone who asks, considers going to them only as a last resort or - as in this case - hasn't thought of it.
And of course the church as a healing community is open to people who aren't regular church attenders as well. If churches aren't prepared to pray with anyone in trouble, they're not doing their job. But many churches are doing their job. People who ask for prayer are prayed with, prayed for, and find strength and support and, in many instances, find a life that's fuller, richer and deeper than the one they had before they became ill.
And sometimes they get physically healed as well, against all the odds.
Jesus said, 'Ask, and you'll receive.'
It's appalling when someone asks - approaches a church looking for help - and doesn't receive any prayer or time or personal interest.
But it seems even sadder to me when someone in such need of help asks everyone except their local church. Especially when the person is Christian themselves.
